Managing membership organisations inevitably involves establishing a series of internal measures: those relating to growth, recruitment, retention, cash flow and costs are typical examples.
However, answering “how are we doing?” requires an external perspective. We need to look at other organisations and ask the question more fully: “how are we doing compared to others?”
Benchmarking can only illustrate apparent differences and every membership body is as unique as any other in terms of history and culture. Nonetheless, we believe that the gaps identified (if they are analysed and interpreted accurately) are realistic indicators of ranges of opportunity.
