How to reach out to international members

How can we reach out to international members? Is it really possible to pick up the phone and speak directly with them? Surely, we can’t call a member half-way around the world? These are some of the questions we have been asked recently and our answer would be yes, you absolutely can!

It’s clear to us that many Professional Bodies are finding it difficult to contact their international members, even for some who have a regional office structure. Understandably the pandemic caused major struggles and difficulties, but ultimately historic issues remain; do we have enough resource and the capabilities to tackle the workload and time differentials?

Despite these uncertainties we have seen a very positive response to this form of member contact. Recent campaigns have not only been successful in terms of retention but have proven to be an impressive membership engagement exercise. Feedback from international members has demonstrated the importance of two-way contact and most have been surprised that “HQ” has taken the time to contact them in this way;

"I feel rather privileged, being called from the UK, it must be the middle of the night for you?!"

"I didn't think I would be contacted by telephone since I’m in another continent, the time difference is fairly substantial!"

There is often an assumption that a UK based organisation will prioritise its UK members above others. By connecting with everyone in the same way promotes lines of communication and establishes a strong future relationship. It also provides a sense of belonging within the overall membership body rather than just another number in the “overseas” group.

The telephone really is a powerful engagement tool for all membership organisations, no matter where in the world you live!
